Barry Island is quintessentially a nostalgic seaside location with arcades, a fun fair and a gorgeous sandy beach but hidden further along the road at the next cove is Jacksons Bay. A smaller sandy cove loved by the locals as its hidden away further up the road where tourism hasn’t found it yet. Along the east side of the bay is a small harbour and here is a breakwater that juts out into sea, and at the end of this breakwater is Jacksons Bay lighthouse. This little lighthouse was built in the later 19th century and during the peak of Welsh coal exports, Barry dock and Jacksons Bay saw over 11 million tonnes of coal and coke pass through it’s ports. The remains of the narrow gauge railway is still visible along the breakwater.
